Some masks are made to disguise and conceal. Others are made to empower and reveal.

Created by the residents of ADI Jerusalem ahead of Purim 2021, these special masks celebrate the innate abilities and cheerful spirit of each featured artist โ€“ the real people behind the mask of disability.

ADI is Israelโ€™s most comprehensive provider of residential care for individuals with severe disabilities and the leader of the national rehabilitation movement. In addition to individualized medical care and special education, ADI employs numerous rehabilitative techniques to help its residents โ€“ children, adolescents and adults โ€“ reach their fullest potentials and live happy, dignified and meaningful lives.

The masks displayed in this special exhibit are soulful works of art crafted in one of the many engaging art therapy workshops that allow the ADI residents to tap into their creative abilities, learn how to express themselves, and build their self-esteem.

Every brushstroke highlights the endless love and attention showered upon the residents by ADIโ€™s professional staff and volunteers, and every finished mask represents an invaluable opportunity for creative exploration, life skill development and personal growth.

From wonderful events at ADI Jerusalem and ADI Negev-Nahalat Eran to special disability inclusion programming across North America and the United Kingdom to longtime supporters spreading awareness via social media, we feel so connected to our global ADI family at a time when we could feel so distant. We are so grateful for the partnership and support of exceptional individuals like Joseph & Sue Ferrara, their children, Craig Pearson & Terri Ferrara Pearson, and all of their amazing grandchildren who...

Lindsey Shapiro, a 6th grader at Charles E. Smith Jewish Day School, won the contest with an entry entitled โ€˜Safe-T-Tape,โ€™ a tape-like product with bumps that can make dangerous or unfamiliar spaces more accessible to people who are blind or visually impaired. This easy-to-use dispenser of tactile ground surface indicators, like those found on city streets and subway platforms, represents a real solution for making indoor and outdoor locations safer and easier to navigate for people of all abilities.

On Sunday, February 28, ADIโ€™s panel of experts, including members of ADIโ€™s professional staff, innovation journalists, and specialists in the field of accessible design, met with the top five finalists and their parents via Zoom to discuss their entries in greater detail. The proceedings concluded with Shapiro being crowned the contest winner and presented with the $1,000 grand prize, a gift from the Avraham and Esther Klein Young Entrepreneurs Fund.

We are blown away by the consideration and creativity of each and every one of our student participants, the newest members of the โ€˜maker movement.โ€™ Their brilliant innovations make it clear that they are using their hearts and minds to consider the experiences of others, and that we are on the right track to spreading awareness and creating a better and more caring world! ๐ŸŒŽโค
